I read online that the slave is a closed unit and located in the bell. Remove the master cylinder from the vise. Replacing clutch master cylinder on a 2004 Saturn ion 2.2 ltr and having problems bleeding.Wrap the master cylinder with a clean shop cloth to prevent brake fluid spills. Remove the fittings with the transparent hoses from the master cylinder ports.Install the cap to the hose nipple on the reservoir, to prevent fluid loss and contamination.Remove the transparent hoses from the reservoir.Continue to depress and release the primary piston until fluid flows freely from the ports with no evidence of air bubbles. As air is bled from the primary and secondary pistons, the effort required to depress the primary piston will increase and the amount of travel will decrease.Observe the flow of fluid coming from the ports. Using a smooth, round-ended tool, depress and release the primary piston as far as it will travel, a depth of about 25 mm (1 in), several times.Ensure that the ends of the transparent hoses running into the reservoir are fully submerged in the brake fluid.Fill the master cylinder reservoir to at least the half-way point with Saturn P/N 21013073, or equivalent DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.Install transparent hoses to the fittings, then route the hoses into the master cylinder reservoir.Install suitable fittings to the master cylinder ports that match the type of flare seat required and also provide for hose attachment.Remove the cap from the hose nipple on the master cylinder reservoir.Secure the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder in a bench vise so that the rear of the primary piston is accessible. If the flare types are mis-matched, damage to the pipes and/or components, and/or a brake fluid leak may occur. There is a first design and second design of brake pipe flare for the hydraulic brake pipes and system components used on this vehicle. ![]() do a little searching if you want bec im sure there is more than one method. it says the system is full when the reservoir is half full. this is in the same section as replacing the slave cylinder. ![]() Im sure theres a procedure better written than this somewhere (I think I found one on the redline forums), but this is from what I can recall. my chilton's manual says that the clutch hydraulic system does not need bleeding-it even goes so far a to say not to attempt to bleed the system. once you have it full, slowly release the clutch, and watch the fluid to make sure it doesn't go empty and not let any air into the system. once you have it up to pressure, clip the hose back on, push the metal clip, and make sure you have plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir (brake and clutch share fluid). ![]() once you have it bleed ready, pump it up a bit (when I did it, I had the needle at 20.whatever the unit of vacuum is.and it gave plenty of pressure). too far, and itll just come out all together. pull it just enough, and itll open the nozzle to be able to bleed it. there is a metal clip to detach, and the clutch hose should be able to unsnap. Have someone floor the clutch and hold it, while having a vacuum pump (oreilly has a mighty vac that works well) attached to the bleeder nozzle. The bleeder nozzle is on the clutch line just before it enters the tranny ( ). This brings back memories when I had to do this from a faulty master cyl and pedal lol.
